Spotlight is a new, 8-week theatre program that introduces kids to the magic of theatre. Participants will explore all aspects including the world of design, backstage and technical skills and, of course, performance. On the final day of class, friends and family will be invited to see a final presentation showcasing all that students have created and discovered.

Adapted from the best-selling book The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan and featuring a thrilling original rock score, The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical is an action-packed mythical adventure.

Level 1: Learn to Swim

October 15 - December 10

Sundays, 12:00 PM - 12:30 PM

Ages: 5+

This class is for the first-time swimmer that doesn’t know how to swim. Skills to be taught in this level include entering and exiting the water, blowing bubbles, bobbing, opening eyes underwater and retrieving submerged objects, front and back gliding, back floating, rolling from
front to back and back to front, treading water, alternating simultaneous arm and leg actions in front and back, combining arm and leg actions on front and back and age-appropriate water safety topics.

Level 2: Fundamental Aquatics Skills

October 15 - December 10

Sundays, 12:00 PM - 12:30 PM

Ages 5+

This class is for the child who can swim independently and has not mastered his/her stroke techniques. Skills to be taught include entering and exiting the water, submerging, bobbing, opening eyes underwater and retrieving submerged objects, front, jellyfish, and tuck floating, front kicking and gliding, back kicking, and gliding, rolling from front to back and back to front, rotary breathing, treading water, combining arm and leg actions on front and back and age- appropriate water safety skills.

Level 3: Stroke Development

October 15 - December 10

Sundays, 1:30 PM-2:00 PM

Ages 5+

The objectives of Learn-to-Swim Level 3 are to expand proficiency of previously learned skills by
providing additional guided practice. Participants learn and practice survival floating and learn
to swim front crawl and elementary backstroke at rudimentary proficiency levels. We begin
introduction of the scissors and dolphin kicks and extend the time duration for treading water.
Participants also learn rules for headfirst entries and begin to learn to enter the water headfirst

from a seated position at poolside. As in all levels, new and previously addressed water safety
topics are included. Participants who successfully complete Level 3 have achieved basic water
competency in a pool environment.

Level 4: Stroke Improvement (equivalent to Pre-Fins Beg. Novice)

October 15 - December 10

Sundays, 1:30 PM-2:00 PM

Ages 5+

In Learn-to-Swim Level 4, participants improve their aquatic skills and increase their endurance by swimming the strokes learned in Level 3 (i.e., front crawl, elementary backstroke) for greater distances and with more advanced proficiency. Participants add arm actions to the previously
learned scissors kick and breaststroke kick to perform the rudimentary sidestroke and to learn the breaststroke. Participants also begin to learn the back crawl and butterfly, as well as the basics of performing a simple open turn at a wall.

Unexpected Artistry!

Grades 1-5

Draw designs of the imagination with eyes closed, dance and paint to music and more! Artists will enjoy the art of creating outside the lines. It is recommended to bring a smock or wear paint-friendly clothing.

Soccer for Kids

October 17 – December 12

Tuesdays 4:15 PM-5:00 PM

K-5

JCC staff will run a 45-minute clinic from 4:15 PM-5:00 PM in which participants will be taughtthe basics of soccer skills. We will focus on learning the rules of the game, basic skills, and strategies. Children in our Kids’ Place program are encouraged to participate.

Power for Kids & Teens

October 17-December 12

Ages 10-14

Power for Kids & Teens is a strength and conditioning program that is specifically designed for kids and teenagers to help them develop a lifelong love of fitness. In a group setting, children and teens participate in fun and engaging workouts that deliver measurable results and prepare them to be well-rounded athletes. This class is perfect for learning effective exercise as well as conditioning to prepare for sports seasons.

Hip-Hop

October 19-April 18

Kindergarten - Age 10

This class under the direction of Richmond Urban Dance is a class designed for students that want to learn the fundamentals of hip hop dance. It focuses on basic technique and skills, as well as learning choreography. Each class builds on the one prior. This class is for boys and girls. The Dance Recital will be held April 21, 2024.

Adult Beginning Hip-Hop

October 18 - December 13

Wednesdays @ 6:30 PM-7:30 PM

Ages 16+

If you have always wanted to learn hip hop but didn’t want to be in a kid’s class, this is for you. In the class we will break down new moves each week, repeat them until you feel comfortable and then put them together in a short routine to one of your favorite tunes. It’s a great time and a good workout too for your mind and body.

Israeli Folk Dance - Beginners

September - December or August

Mondays @ 7:30PM - 9:45PM

Ages 16+

In a warm and inviting atmosphere, learn the steps involved with Israeli dancing, both traditional and modern. This class continues to be one of the most popular classes at the Weinstein JCC, and the first class is always free! Winter Season and Spring Season options available. Questions? Israeli Folk Dance - Advanced

Thursdays @ 7:30PM - 9:45PM

Ages 16+

Prerequisite: Israeli Folk Dance Beginners. For those who love to dance and have some knowledge of Israeli Folk Dance, this class provides the opportunity to “just dance” and learn new dances as well, in a warm and inviting atmosphere. Fall Season and Full Year options available.

Dolphin Club Swim Team

There has been something special happening here at the Weinstein JCC with the Dolphin Club Swimming program. With the “Fin Family”, athletes can experience competitive swimming in an environment that facilitates self-confidence, teaches patience throughout a process, and encourages positive relationship building.
