As the only Jewish theatre in the Richmond area, the Weinstein JCC’s Jewish Family Theatre produces and presents plays that connect Jews to their own cultural community and build bridges to others. This talented group gives a voice to the amazing creativity present in our community, encouraging people to explore art in their own lives through affordable, high-quality theatrical experiences. Introducing Jewish Family Theatre’s Second Stage: Accelerated Youth Performing Arts Program

Are you a young theatre enthusiast looking to take your skills to the next level? We are thrilled to announce the launch of Jewish Family Theatre’s Second Stage, a fee-based youth performing arts education program designed to provide an immersive and professional experience for emerging theatre artists like you.

Second Stage is specifically crafted to guide and nurture young talents through the exciting process of putting on a show. With an accelerated rehearsal process, you’ll dive deep into the world of theatre and gain valuable insights into the professional world of performance.

Key Program Features:

Audition-Based Selection: To ensure a high level of commitment and talent, auditions are required for participation in Second Stage. This allows us to assemble a dedicated and passionate group of performers who are ready to explore their potential.

Rehearsal Process: With focused rehearsals and intensive training, Second Stage offers a timeline to replicate the professional theatre experience. You’ll work closely with experienced professionals to refine your skills and elevate your performance.

Show Production: Throughout the program, you will be actively involved in the creation of a captivating stage production. From script analysis to character development, blocking to choreography, and vocal training to ensemble work, every aspect of the production process will be covered to give you a comprehensive understanding of theatre.

Youth Performing Arts Education: In addition to the show rehearsals, Second Stage offers a structured curriculum that encompasses various elements of performing arts education. Through workshops, masterclasses, and discussions, you’ll broaden your knowledge, explore different aspects of theatre, and enhance your overall artistic abilities.

Teen Audition Call: RENT – School Edition

 

 

Get ready to hit the stage! Second Stage, a division of Jewish Family Theatre at the Weinstein JCC, is on the lookout for talented local teens to join the summer production of RENT: School Edition—an iconic musical by Jonathan Larson.

CHARACTER SPOTLIGHT:
Mark Cohen: Filmmaker and video artist. A bit of a nerd.
Roger Davis: Struggling musician. Roommates with Mark. Many demons.
Tom Collins: Computer genius and liberal professor. Former roommate.
Benny Coffin: Landlord for Mark & Roger. Traded in morals for power.
Joanne: Lawyer. Headstrong. In a relationship with Maureen.
Maureen: Zany performance artist. Recently dumped Mark for Joanne.
Angel: Street drummer and fabulous drag queen. Falls for Tom Collins.
Mimi: Stripper with drug addictions. Good heart.
Ensemble (To play multiple characters/roles)

IMPORTANT NOTICE FOR PARENTS AND ACTORS:

Before joining our production of “RENT,” familiarize yourself with the original cast recording and the musical’s themes. While it’s a School Edition approved for young performers, it tackles intense subjects. Your comfort is our priority.

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR: 

Teens aged 14–19 for ALL roles. We welcome and encourage diverse talents and personalities. No experience necessary—just a passion for performance!

HOW TO AUDITION:

Submit a video audition by March 5, 2024. Prepare 16-32 bars of an up-tempo rock/pop musical theater song. Sing with a pianist or accompaniment track—no acapella singing, please. Include a full head-to-toe slate with your name, age, preferred pronouns, and the role you’re interested in (or if you’re open to any role, including Ensemble).

EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM DETAILS:

Tuition: $495.00 per student (Financial Aid available)

Rehearsals:

May 6 – June 30, Mon-Thu 6:30 – 9:30 pm, Sun 1 – 5 pm.

Production: June 19 – June 30 (No Fri/Sat performances, Sunday matinees)
