Middle School ARTventure

September - December

Mondays @ 5:00 - 6:30 PM

Grade 6 - 8

This six-week class offers art-minded middle schoolers a chance to create different art projects weekly. Whether you are familiar with art or simply ready to try something new, this class offers the best of both worlds. Join us as we explore painting, mixed media and more. Reconnect with old friends while making new ones in a creative and fun environment! Materials are included the price.

Kids Yoga

In this playful and welcoming class, kids are invited to connect with their bodies, minds, creativity, and each other. Free from pressure or competition, children will explore yoga and mindfulness through engaging activities that promote self-awareness, confidence, and emotional regulation. They’ll build lifelong skills for reducing stress, embracing who they are, and showing respect for others. With a focus on cooperation and compassion, we’ll nurture a strong sense of community—and have a lot of fun along the way!

Family Yoga

Krav Maga

Krav Maga is a self-defense system developed for the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) to maximize your impact and minimize your risk in a self-defense situation. It combines practical techniques from various Martial Arts to defend on your feet or on the ground. In this 8-week class, students will experience firsthand their own power, strength, and resilience in a safe and disciplined atmosphere.

Level 1: Learn to Swim

September 14 – November 2

This class is for the first-time swimmer that doesn’t know how to swim. Skills to be taught in this level include entering and exiting the water, blowing bubbles, bobbing, opening eyes underwater and retrieving submerged objects, front and back gliding, back floating, rolling from
front to back and back to front, treading water, alternating simultaneous arm and leg actions in front and back, combining arm and leg actions on front and back and age-appropriate water safety topics.

Level 2: Fundamental Aquatics Skills

This class is for the child who can swim independently and has not mastered his/her stroke techniques. Skills to be taught include entering and exiting the water, submerging, bobbing, opening eyes underwater and retrieving submerged objects, front, jellyfish, and tuck floating, front kicking and gliding, back kicking, and gliding, rolling from front to back and back to front, rotary breathing, treading water, combining arm and leg actions on front and back and age- appropriate water safety skills.

Level 3: Stroke Development

September 14 – November 2

Ages 5+

The objectives of Learn-to-Swim Level 3 are to expand proficiency of previously learned skills by providing additional guided practice. Participants learn and practice survival floating and learn to swim front crawl and elementary backstroke at rudimentary proficiency levels. We begin introduction of the scissors and dolphin kicks and extend the time duration for treading water. Participants also learn rules for headfirst entries and begin to learn to enter the water headfirst from a seated position at poolside. As in all levels, new and previously addressed water safety topics are included. Participants who successfully complete Level 3 have achieved basic water competency in a pool environment.

Level 4: Stroke Improvement

In Learn-to-Swim Level 4, participants improve their aquatic skills and increase their endurance by swimming the strokes learned in Level 3 (i.e., front crawl, elementary backstroke) for greater distances and with more advanced proficiency. Participants add arm actions to the previously learned scissors kick and breaststroke kick to perform the rudimentary sidestroke and to learn the breaststroke. Participants also begin to learn the back crawl and butterfly, as well as the basics of performing a simple open turn at a wall.

Calling all middle-schoolers! Come hang out at the J with Youth and Camp Hilbert Director, Tuck Tucker, twice a month on Sundays for Ruach & Recreation, a brand-new, vibrant, meaningful, and movement-filled Jewish youth program, tailored for middle schoolers. Attendees will participate in age-appropriate activities that will provide social interaction, promote physical and emotional wellbeing and focus on community and service, all through a Jewish lens. Events will take place at the Weinstein JCC as well as other locations within the Richmond area.

Fall Festival at Camp Hilbert

Come and spend the day with family and friends at Camp Hilbert, the Weinstein JCC’s day camp located in Maidens, VA (Goochland County). While taking in the colors of the beautiful Fall landscape, enjoy family-friendly nature-based, outdoor activities around Lake Rosalie, on the sports fields and along the wooded trails. There will be live music, delicious Kosher food, arts and crafts, athletics, and much more! Feel free to bring your own lunch, picnic blankets and/or chairs.
