From the author of titles Nothing Like a Dame and A Wonderful Guy, Here’s to the Ladies is Eddie Shapiro’s latest collection of intimate, career-encompassing conversations with yet more of Broadway’s most prolific and fascinating leading women. In this fun-filled evening, Eddie Shapiro will share detailed stories and reflections of his conversations with such luminaries as Barbara Cook, Kelli O’Hara, Heather Headley, Faith Prince, and others. Local talent, including audience favorite, Desiree Roots, will perform noteworthy scenes from the musicals, highlighting both the great women AND the great men of musical theater. Together, they tell the story of what it means to be a lead on Broadway over the past fifty years.

The result is his debut novel, Prescription for Pain: How A Once Promising Doctor Became the “Pill Mill Killer,” which offers an intimate exploration into the life and mindset of one of the nation’s most prolific opioid prescribers.

Before soundtracking the Summer of Love as The Mamas & The Papas, musicians John Phillips, Michelle Phillips, Cass Elliot, and Denny Doherty honed their talents in groups like The Smoothies, The Journeymen, the Halifax Three, The Big 3 and The Mugwumps. In Gettin’ Kinda Itchie, local author, Richard Campbell, traces the circuitous lives of these groups and individuals from 1957 until 1965 – featuring secret marriages, hilarious hijinks and FBI investigations – as they each contributed to the sound, styles and persona that set the foundation of American folk rock.

Kugels & Collards: Stories of Food, Family and Tradition in Jewish South Carolina

In Kugels & Collards, Rachel Gordin Barnett and Lyssa Kligman Harvey explore the food history, traditions, and memories of Jews in South Carolina, building on their blog of the same title. The book explores the diversity of Jewish South Carolina, with stories and recipes contributed from families with Sephardic and Ashkenazi heritage who have been in the state for hundreds of years, from descendants of Holocaust survivors, and from more recent immigrants from Russia and Israel. Kugels & Collards is also a story of cultural assimilation and exchange and considers how local ingredients and techniques have become part of the South Carolina Jewish table.

Joel Chasnoff: I'm Not Your Zayde's Jewish Comedian

Stand-up comedian, former IDF soldier, and author of multiple non-fiction books, including the newly released Israel 201, Joel Chasnoff is unlike a lot of Jewish comics. Joel’s comedy is clever, clean, and positive. No stereotypes, no tired Borscht-Belt cliches. Just hip, wholesome comedy about the joys and oys! of Jewish life. Joel has performed at more than 1,500 Jewish events in ten countries, from the Melbourne Comedy Festival in Australia to Israeli late-night TV.

Israel's Black Panthers-The Radicals Who Punctured A Nation's Founding Myth

Israel’s Black Panthers tells the story of the young and impoverished Moroccan Israeli Jews who challenged their country’s political status quo and rebelled against the ethnic hierarchy of Israeli life in the 1970s. Inspired by the American group of the same name, the Black Panthers mounted protests and a yearslong political campaign for the rights of Mizrahim, or Jews of Middle Eastern ancestry. They managed to rattle the country’s establishment and change the course of Israel’s history through the mass mobilization of a Jewish underclass.

Their concerts combine an eclectic array of styles, sophisticated musicianship, good songwriting, deep grooves, and years of friendship with a simple message of Unity in the Community.
