Maybe swimming is one way you stay healthy and fit. Maybe you’d love to splash around with your kids in a spotless pool. Or maybe you’re looking for swimming activities for your children. The Weinstein JCC has it all in two beautiful indoor pools and Camp Hilbert's outdoor facilities.
The Weinstein JCC Aquatics Department brings you more than just swimming pools. We bring you a sense of community in a place where you and your family can get involved in learning water activities and more. Elements of this program are open to both members and non-members.
The Weinstein JCC has dozens of swim classes for all ages and all levels of skill. Our highly qualified instructors can make enjoying the water part of your family’s life. This water aerobics class meets twice a week and is great for adults looking for a fun, low-impact physical activity. During class you will perform various movements in 8-10 feet of water to improve joint flexibility, range of motion, and muscle strength. Aqua belts are provided and are required to participate.
The Dolphin Club Swim Team offers both competitive and non-competitive team options and an opportunity to make friends in a fun and active environment. Mark your calendar to attend one of the Open Houses on either Sunday, August 21 at 4:00 pm or Tuesday, August 30 at 6:00 pm to meet the coaches and learn more about the program. Swim evaluations will be conducted to determine each participant’s appropriate group. The season officially starts the week of September 12 and runs through mid-April.

Skills to be taught include: entering and exiting the water, blowing bubbles, bobbing, retrieving submerged objects, front and back gliding, back floating, rolling from front to back, treading water, alternating simultaneous arm and leg actions on front and back, combining arm and leg actions on front and back and age-appropriate water safety topics. (Skills to be performed with assistance)
This class is for the intermediate swimmer, building on the confidence and skills taught in Level 1. Skills may be performed with limited support from instructor.
For the more advanced swimmer, building on the skills in Level 2 through additional guided practice in deeper water. Skills to be taught include: entering the water, headfirst entries, bobbing while moving toward safety, rotary breathing, back and survival floating, changing from vertical to horizontal position on front and back, treading water, flutter and dolphin kicking on front, scissors and breaststroke kicking, front crawling, elementary backstroke and age-appropriate water safety topics.
For the more advanced swimmer building on the skills in Level 3 through additional guided practice, helping swimmers develop confidence in the skills learned. Skills to be taught include: headfirst entries from the side in compact and stride positions, swimming underwater, feet-first surface diving, survival swimming, open turning on front and back, treading water using two different kicks, front and back crawling, elementary backstroke, sidestroke, butterfly, flutter and dolphin kicking on back and age-appropriate water safety topics.
This class provides further coordination and refinement of strokes building on the skills in Level 4. Skills to be taught include: shallow-angle diving from the side then gliding and beginning a front stroke, tuck and pike surface diving, front flip turns and backstroke flip turns while swimming, front and back crawling, elementary backstroke, breaststroke, sidestroke and butterfly, sculling and age-appropriate water safety topics.
This class is for the child who has successfully completed all previous levels or has been on a summer or winter swim team and is looking to improve swimming technique and gain endurance. Level 6 focuses on preparing participants for more advanced courses, such as year round competitive swimming, synchronized swimming or dive team, and includes the following water safety topics: Fitness Swimmer, Personal Water Safety and Fundamentals of Diving.
Level 1 orients children to the aquatic environment and helps them gain basic aquatic skills. These skills include entering and exiting the water, blowing bubbles through mouth and nose, submerging mouth, nose and eyes, opening eyes underwater and retrieving submerged objects, front and back gliding, back floating, rolling from front to back and back to front, treading water, alternating and simultaneous arm and leg actions on front and back, combining arm and leg actions on front and back and age-appropriate water safety skills. Children must be fully potty trained to participate; this class is designed to be your child’s first water experience without a parent.
Level 2 helps children gain greater independence in their skills and develop more comfort in and around water. Skills to be taught include entering and exiting the water, bobbing, opening eyes underwater and retrieving submerged objects, front floating, back gliding and floating, rolling from front to back and back to front, treading water using arms and legs, combining arm and leg actions on front and back, finning arm action on back and age-appropriate water safety skills.
Level 3 helps children start to gain basic swimming propulsive skills to be comfortable in and around water. Skills to be taught include entering the water, fully submerging and holding breath in the water, bobbing, rotary breathing, front, jellyfish and tuck floating, front and back floating or gliding with recoveries, changing direction of travel while swimming on front and back, finning arm action on back and age-appropriate water safety topics.
Level 1 provides experiences and activities for children to: learn to ask for permission before entering the water, enter and exit the water safely, feel comfortable in the water, explore submerging to the mouth, nose and eyes and fully submerging, explore buoyancy on the front and back position, change body position in the water, learn how to play safely, experience wearing a U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket and learn age-appropriate water safety skills.
Level 2 builds upon the skills learned in Level 1 and provides experiences and activities for children to: establish expectations for adult supervision, learn more ways to enter and exit the water safely, explore submerging in a rhythmic pattern, glide on the front and back with assistance, perform combined stroke on front and back with assistance, change body position in the water, experience wearing a U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket in the water and learn age-appropriate water safety skills.
Throughout the three levels, preschool-age children are taught basic aquatic safety and swimming skills, all the while increasing their comfort level in and around the water. Skills are age-appropriate, helping children achieve success on a regular basis and enjoy social interactions with other children. As in all swimming and water safety courses, your child will always know that safety is first. Children will be grouped by their abilities as various levels are taught at the same time. Children must be fully potty trained to participate; this class is designed to be your child’s first water experience without a parent.
Meet with one of our Water Safety Instructors/Masters Coaches to help jump start, motivate or invigorate your workout plan in the pool. If you have medical issues, a medical release from your doctor is required prior to scheduling. These sessions are only available for Weinstein JCC members.
Need to take an American Red Cross lifeguard and/or First Aid/CPR/AED certification course? Contact the Weinstein JCC Aquatics Department at 545-8640 for the next available class or to set-up a customized class that fits your schedule (Our classes have a minimum of 4 participants). Class certification is good for two years.
Our private swim lessons are customized to meet the participant's needs. Instructors use a gentle and encouraging approach enabling students to overcome fear of the water and progress quickly. Kids love pools—and pool parties. So, call our Party Coordinator at (804) 545-8640 to set up your child’s pool birthday party today! The party consists of one hour in the party room (which you supervise) and one hour of pool fun, where we supply the lifeguard (children must be 5 or over). Parent-tot parties are also available for 2-4 year olds. Our salt-water Sternheimer Recreational Pool features a beach entry, small slide, large spiral slide, lemon drops, mushroom waterfall, lazy river and whirlpool. Lifeguards will be provided.
Party times vary: Saturdays 11 – 5 pm or Sundays 12 – 5 pm

The ideal place to immerse yourself in health. Kept at 82 degrees, this 25-yard, six lane salt-water pool is used for everything from general lap swim and deep water fitness to instructional swim lessons. It’s also the home pool for the Dolpholinas Synchronized Swim Team and the Dolphin Club Summer and Winter Swim Teams.
Please note that based on time of day and usage of the pool, lifeguards may intiate circle-swim. There will also be signage during programs and private swim lessons to indicate which lanes are open for free swim. Open swim lanes are reflected on the pool schedule, but if you have any questions please feel free to contact Kelly Johannsen at (804) 545-8640.
It’s family fun year-round. This 86-degree recreational saltwater pool is our own tiny water park. The Sternheimer Recreational Pool includes two waterslides, a lazy river, a sitting area with whirlpool-like jets, a mushroom waterfall and lemon drop and wall sprays. Programming includes recreational play for all ages, instructional swim lessons and shallow water fitness.
Hours that the Rec Pool is open to the community are also posted.
Want to soak in some sunshine while you swim? Members are welcome to use the beautiful Rec and Lap Pool at Camp Hilbert on weekends during the summer from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Just bring your ID between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. Saturday and/or Sunday.
Members may bring up to four guests per family per day. Guests passes may be purchased in advance at the Weinstein JCC or at the Camp Hilbert Pool check-in for $5. And if you work up an appetite while you’re here, full concessions are available at the Hilbert Snack Bar run by Yossi Goel and friends from 11:30 am to 5:00 pm. 1. No swimming without a lifeguard on duty.
2. Be careful. No running or rough play.
3. No child under 8 permitted in pool area without an adult.
4. Children who are not toilet-trained must wear a swim diaper in the pool.
5. Proper swimwear required.
6. Excessive talking to the lifeguard is not permitted.
7. Think safety. No glass in pool area.
8. Consumption of food and beverages in the swimming pool is prohibited.
9. Persons with open sores, skin infections, wearing bandages, or other physical ailments are prohibited from entering the water.
10. At the first sign of thunder, the pool will close for 30 minutes. Each additional clap of thunder or lightning will delay the re-opening of the pool 30 minutes from that point.
11. Pool area reserved for members and their guests.
12. The Weinstein JCC is not responsible for lost or stolen articles.
By participating in the Weinstein JCC’s swim team programs, children can improve their skills as they learn critical values like teamwork, responsibility, dedication and self-discipline.
The Weinstein JCC’s Dolphin Club was founded in 1955 and is a registered swim club with Virginia Swimming, a Local Swim Committee of USA Swimming. As a part of USA Swimming, the Dolphin Club participates in the Safe Sport Program, which is focused on creating and maintaining a fun, healthy and safe environment for its members.
This team is for those swimmers who have passed, or can pass, Level III swimming or gain approval from the swim coach. Under the supervision of Head Coach Jonathan Kaplan, swimmers will learn various techniques and experience the excitement of competitive swimming and the chance to represent the Weinstein JCC at local meets. The Weinstein JCC’s Dolpholinas are a nationally ranked synchro team designed to teach swimmers synchro skills and good sportsmanship. Here, girls ages 11 to 18 have the opportunity to learn fun routines and improve their synchro skills while meeting new friends and competing in local, regional and national meets.
