Impact Stories
Every gift changes a life. These stories show how generosity transforms our community each day.

Lynn and Jay Schwartz – A Legacy of Community and Connection
For Lynn and Jay, supporting the Weinstein JCC is about belonging, legacy, and building a stronger, more inclusive community for future generations. Lynn’s connection to the JCC spans decades and four generations, starting with her father’s service on the board and continuing through her own board leadership and her daughter Erica’s involvement. “It creates a legacy,” Lynn said. “Sometimes generosity is contagious; it makes others want to join in and create their own legacy.” What makes the Weinstein JCC special to Lynn is its inclusivity and wide-reaching impact. “It’s a place where the whole community is connected,” she shared. “You can go into the fitness center and come out with new friends. In the preschool, you see children of all ethnicities and abilities. It brings everybody together, and especially these days, that’s really needed.” Jay agreed, describing the JCC as a safe space and the heart of the Jewish community, where people can be themselves and feel welcomed. Lynn and Jay have been generous donors and tireless advocates for the Weinstein JCC, co-chairing campaigns and encouraging others to give. “We don’t want anything to happen to the Weinstein JCC’s footprint in the community,” Lynn said. “It takes all kinds of generosity—time, money, connections—to keep the doors open and the impact strong.” Jay added, “We give because we care. We care about the mission of the JCC. We care about there being a Jewish Community Center, not just for now, but for all generations to come.”

Adam and Michelle Shor – Building a Legacy of Community and Commitment
For Adam and Michelle Shor, the Weinstein JCC is more than just a building, it’s a cornerstone of their lives and a vision for the future. Adam’s roots run deep: his mother attended preschool at the JCC, his father served as a past president, and Adam himself grew up immersed in its programs, from BBYO weekends and Maccabi games to summers at Camp Hilbert. Michelle, originally from Northern Virginia, was immediately struck by the beauty and warmth of the Weinstein JCC on her first visit. Now, as parents, they enjoy bringing their 1-year-old son Bennett to the pool and imagining his future in preschool and at Camp Hilbert. Their shared experiences have shaped a powerful sense of belonging. “You walk in and see preschoolers, older adults chatting, teens heading to swim team, it’s a true multi-generational community,” Adam says. “As new parents, the Shors are committed to ensuring the JCC remains vibrant for families like theirs.” Adam has already stepped into leadership roles, including co-chairing the JCC’s annual golf tournament, following in his father’s footsteps. “It’s nice to see the transition as our parents step back and we step in,” he reflects. Michelle states, “We contribute in any way we can and cut back on other expenses because this is important for Bennett and for our community.” Adam expresses gratitude to long-time supporters: “Your generosity provides us the chance to grow. Thank you for considering the next generation. We look forward to reaching the point you're at now.”

A New Beginning: How Camp Hilbert Became a Lifeline for One Ukrainian Family
When Nadia and her family arrived in the United States from Ukraine in August 2022, they carried feelings of upheaval, uncertainty, and the daunting task of starting over in unfamiliar surroundings. Without knowledge of how American systems function and lacking a local support network, they turned to Jewish Family Services (JFS) for guidance. What they discovered was more than assistance; it was a community that embraced them with open arms. Soon after, the Weinstein JCC offered additional support. Nadia’s younger daughter, Mia, who was eight years old at the time, received a scholarship to attend Camp Hilbert. Mia had been struggling with English after a year in public school. The camp experience became a turning point. Surrounded by peers, engaged in daily activities, and encouraged by caring counselors, her language skills improved dramatically. Even more importantly, she found joy, friendship, and a sense of belonging. “This was her first real connection to life here,” Nadia shared. “She made friends and asked to return this year. Camp Hilbert became part of her American journey.” Now ten, Mia continues to thrive. One of her favorite aspects of camp is its natural setting. In her own words, “I like that it's in the forest and all nature.” That connection to the outdoors has become a treasured part of her summer. Her older sister, Kira, now fifteen, joined Camp Hilbert this summer as a Counselor-in-Training. Through this role, she has developed leadership and empathy that extend beyond camp and into their home life. The influence of Camp Hilbert has reached beyond the children. Nadia herself feels welcomed by the broader community. “We’re not Jewish, but we’ve never felt like outsiders,” she said. “From the beginning, they told me, ‘You don’t need to be sorry. We help because we understand what it’s like to lose everything in a single day.’” None of this would be possible without the generosity of donors who support the Send a Kid to Camp Campaign. Thanks to their kindness and dedication, children like Mia and Kira can experience the growth, joy, and connection that Camp Hilbert provides. Nadia and her family, along with many others, are deeply grateful. “We appreciate our donors so much,” she said. “You’ve given our children more than a summer. You’ve given them a sense of belonging.” In a world often marked by displacement and division, the story of Nadia’s family serves as a powerful reminder of what compassion and inclusion can achieve.
