Jewish Family Theatre

As the only Jewish theatre in the Richmond area, the Weinstein JCC’s Jewish Family Theatre produces and presents plays that connect Jews to their own cultural community and build bridges to others. This talented group gives a voice to the amazing creativity present in our community, encouraging people to explore art in their own lives through affordable, high-quality theatrical experiences.

As a true community theatre, the JFT operates on an all-volunteer base. Friends of all ages and ethnicities, from beginners to experienced pros, are invited to learn, enjoy and participate in all aspects of our live theatre.

About the Director

A theatre artist in the Richmond community for over 30 years, Debra Clinton has made a career performing, directing, writing, and teaching theatre. Directorial credits include work at Virginia Repertory Theatre, Firehouse Theatre, Richmond Triangle Players, Dogwood Dell and countless productions here at the JCC, including work on the inclusive theatre program, Kesem. Debra is a proud recipient of the 2013 Theresa Pollack award for excellence in theatre, as well as a recipient of a Richmond Theatre Critics Circle Award for her libretto and lyrics for the original musical, Croaker, along with composer Jason Marks.

By day, Debra moonlights as a theatre instructor in Hanover County, providing the opportunity to pass along her love and knowledge of theatre and spend her days doing what she loves. She is grateful to her supportive family who have always grounded her and to all those at the Weinstein JCC who support the arts and the work done by Jewish Family Theatre.

2019-20 Season

JFT Presents: “Gypsy”

Artistic Direction by Debra Clinton, Musical Direction by Stephen Rudlin, Choreography by Pam Turner

Regarded by many theater professionals as the greatest musical ever created, GYPSY is the ultimate tale of an ambitious stage mother fighting for her daughters’ success…while secretly yearning for her own. Set all across America in the 1920’s, when vaudeville was dying and burlesque was born, Arthur Laurents’ landmark show explores the world of two-bit show business with brass, humor, heart, and sophistication.

Stephen Sondheim and Jule Styne’s celebrated score boasts one glorious hit after another, including: “Let Me Entertain You,” “Some People,” “You’ll Never Get Away from Me,” “If Momma Was Married,” “All I Need Is the Girl,” “Everything’s Coming Up Roses,” “You Gotta Get A Gimmick,” “Small World,” and “Together Wherever We Go.”

Recommended for ages 10+

JFT Presents: “Torch Song”

Winner! 1983 Tony® Award for Best Play for Torch Song Trilogy

Artistic Direction by Debra Clinton

In Torch Song – the two-act revival of Harvey Fierstein’s award-winning Torch Song Trilogy – the life of Arnold Beckoff, a torch song-singing, Jewish drag queen living in New York City, is dramatized over the span of the late 1970s and 1980s. Told with a likable, human voice, Torch Song follows Arnold’s odyssey to find happiness in New York. All he wants is a husband, a child, and a pair of bunny slippers that fit, but a visit from his overbearing mother reminds him that he needs one thing more: respect.
