Recreation: Building Skills, Values & Community

Participating in sports is great for your health. But at the Weinstein JCC, sports go beyond the physical to give participants opportunities to grow as a person. In our youth leagues and rec programs, children, their parents and adult team members all build lasting friendships in a friendly environment. Good sportsmanship is always emphasized!

Recreation Programs

Sports can be a lot more fun when you’re participating as a group. At the Weinstein JCC, we bring children and adults opportunities for healthy fun, with classes and rec teams covering a huge range of sports activities.

For preschoolers, the Weinstein JCC is a great place to get moving! Our Lunch and Fun programs include classes in aquatics, fitness, recreation and dance for children ages three and up.

Children ages 6 - 17 can choose from a range of recreational and instructional dance programs, swimming, leagues and classes, including basketball, gymnastics, soccer, flag football, martial arts and more.

Adults can meet friends and enjoy pick-up basketball, pickleball, running clubs and many other gym and fitness activities.

To learn more, see our class list below or visit our Activity Finder.

All-Star Soccer - Spring

Learning a new sport can help your child develop social and motor skills. In this class, your child will learn fundamental soccer skills, including dribbling, passing, and scoring. The lessons taught over the eight sessions will build and end with participants combining all their newly-learned skills in a game. This is a fun, recreational class focused on teaching your child sportsmanship, listening skills and teamwork.

CORE Tumble Bugs - Spring

In this class, children will be introduced to the joy of body movement and awareness through gymnastics, fitness exercises and educational motor development games. Children will develop flexibility, strength, coordination and balance. CORE Kids Academy's mission is to instill and develop confidence by enhancing each child's own capabilities through personal coaching in a group setting.

Sports Spectacular - Spring

This exciting new class is offered to all preschool children in classes that dismiss at 1:30 pm and don't get the opportunity to participate in Lunch and Fun programming. This class will offer your child some fun time in the gym playing a variety of games and sports. Each week a different game will be played. **CLASS IS ONLY OFFERED TO PRESCHOOL CHILDREN WHO ARE DISMISSED AT 1:30PM**

The season will begin with a skill evaluation held on January 7, 2018. The skill evaluation is done in an effort to get a sense of each child’s skill level and thus make teams as even as possible. Team and coaching requests are limited to siblings. Volunteer coaches needed!

Each week the fundamentals of basketball are the focus which include dribbling, passing, shooting, lay ups, defense, and rebounding. Safety, skill development, fun, and sportsmanship are imperative. Practices are held each week prior to playing games. All games are held at the Weinstein JCC. Sign up early for our early-bird discount! For more information, contact Nick Pruden at 545-8607 or

Weinstein JCC Youth Leagues

By joining a youth league, children can build the foundation for a lifetime of healthy activity. The Carole and Marcus Weinstein Jewish Community Center is the ideal place to join. Our Center has a long history of league sports in Greater Richmond, and we’re proud of the memories we’ve created for all who have participated.

The youth leagues at the Weinstein JCC include:

Our Jr. NFL Flag Football League is for ages five to 11. This league focuses on safety, skill development, and fun. And each participant gets an NFL jersey and flag belt. Click here for more information!

Our Jr. NBA Basketball League is for ages four to 11. Players practice before they play a game each week at the Weinstein JCC. (Parents—volunteers for coaching are always welcome!) Click here for more information!
