Recreation: Building Skills, Values & Community

Participating in sports is great for your health. But at the Weinstein JCC, sports go beyond the physical to give participants opportunities to grow as a person. In our youth leagues and rec programs, children, their parents and adult team members all build lasting friendships in a friendly environment. Good sportsmanship is always emphasized!

Recreation Programs

Sports can be a lot more fun when you’re participating as a group. At the Weinstein JCC, we bring children and adults opportunities for healthy fun, with classes and rec teams covering a huge range of sports activities.

For preschoolers, the Weinstein JCC is a great place to get moving! Our Lunch and Fun programs include classes in aquatics, fitness, recreation and dance for children ages three and up.

Children ages 6 - 12 can choose from a range of recreational and instructional dance programs, swimming, leagues and classes, including basketball, gymnastics, soccer, flag football and more.  

Adults can meet friends and enjoy pick-up basketball, pickleball, running clubs and many other gym and fitness activities.

All-Star Soccer - Winter


Learning a new sport can help your child develop social and motor skills. In this class, your child will learn fundamental soccer skills, including dribbling, passing, and scoring. The lessons taught over the eight sessions will build and end with participants combining all their newly-learned skills in a game. This is a fun, recreational class focused on teaching your child sportsmanship, listening skills and teamwork.

Bricks 4 Kidz: A Trip to the Zoo with DUPLO and LEGO Bricks - New!


Welcome to the zoo! There are so many amazing animals in the world, and zoos allow us to learn all about them and see them up close. Did you know a camel can go several days with no food or water because it stores energy in its hump? Did you know when a baby giraffe is born it stands about 6 feet tall? Children will go wild for more fun facts about some amazing animals. It will feel just like a trip to the zoo! They will use counting, placement, vocabulary, and patterning all with DUPLO and LEGO Bricks.

Jr. Ballers - New!


In this new, fun and exciting class, your child will be appropriately introduced to the game of basketball. Learning a new sport can help your child develop social and motor skills. In this class, your child will acquire the fundamentals of the game. Instructors teach the game in a manner to keep your child engaged and having fun at the same time. Some skills taught include dribbling, passing, and shooting. This is a wonderful beginner basketball class focused on teaching your child sportsmanship, listening skills and teamwork.

Jr. NBA


The season will begin with a skill evaluation held on January 6, 2019. The skill evaluation is done in an effort to get a sense of each child's skill level and thus make teams as even as possible. Team and coaching requests are limited to siblings. Volunteer coaches needed!

Each week the fundamentals of basketball are the focus which include dribbling, passing, shooting, lay ups, defense, and rebounding. Safety, skill development, fun, and sportsmanship are imperative. Practices are held each week prior to playing games. All games are held at the Weinstein JCC. Sign up early for our early-bird discount! Youth Dodgeball Frenzy! - NEW!


Come join us for our first annual fun-filled spring Dodgeball league! Everyone is welcome! You can register as a team or free agent in which case you will be placed on a team. Teams can consist of up to 10 players. Players get the choice of choosing their team names and will receive team shirts. Each week will consist of a head-to-head best out of 3 series. The season will conclude with a double-elimination playoff tournament. One parent volunteer is needed to act as a “manager” for each team. All games will be refereed by Weinstein JCC staff.

Maccabi Games & ArtsFest

Seeking Youth Athletes and Artists for JCC Maccabi Games® and ArtsFest® 

JCC Maccabi was created to provide Jewish youth, ages 12-16 years old, with a supportive environment that fosters mutual respect and sportsmanship, where they can interact in an atmosphere of fun, democracy, and peace. Participants cultivate a deeper understanding and instill an appreciation of Jewish values within Jewish youth, enrich their Jewish identity in an informal setting, and encourage their identification with the state of Israel.

The JCC Maccabi Games® and ArtsFest® is the largest Jewish youth event in the world. From August 4-9, 2019, Detroit will welcome over 1500 visiting Jewish teens from across the globe. The JCC Maccabi Games® promotes and encourages the health, physical fitness and well-being of Jewish youth through participation in recreational and athletic activities. The activities for this year’s games are: Boys Baseball, Boys Basketball, Girls Basketball, Boys/Girls Dance, Boys/Girls Golf, Boys/Girls Ice hockey, Boys and Girls Lacrosse, Boys Soccer, Girls Soccer, Girls Softball, Boys/Girls Star Reporter, Boys/Girls Swimming, Boys/Girls Table Tennis, Boys/Girls Tennis, and Girls Volleyball. ArtsFest allows participants to develop creative skills in a variety of areas including acting/improv, culinary arts, dance, musical theater, rock band, social media squad, visual arts, and vocal music. Thanks to a combination of workshops, performances, and exhibitions, the ArtsFest inspires teens and helps them develop individuality through artistic expression. Participants will learn the values of teamwork, integrity, cultural pride and community service while expanding an appreciation of Jewish values, connection to the community, enriching their Jewish identities, improving their overall health and well-being and building lifelong friendships.

Weinstein JCC Youth Leagues

By joining a youth league, children can build the foundation for a lifetime of healthy activity. The Carole and Marcus Weinstein Jewish Community Center is the ideal place to join. Our Center has a long history of league sports in Greater Richmond, and we’re proud of the memories we’ve created for all who have participated.

Our Jr. NFL Flag Football League is for ages five to 11. This league focuses on safety, skill development, and fun. And each participant gets an NFL jersey and flag belt. Click here for more information!
 

Our Jr. NBA Basketball League is for ages four to 11. Players practice before they play a game each week at the Weinstein JCC. (Parents—volunteers for coaching are always welcome!) Click here for more information!
