Sip & Learn Series: “The Newish Jewish Encyclopedia” with the hosts of Unorthodox

Most are familiar with the very popular Jewish podcast, Unorthodox. Weinstein JCC welcomes Unorthodox hosts, Stephanie Butnick, Liel Leibovitz and Mark Oppenheimer, to discuss their deeply knowing, highly entertaining and just a bit irreverent book, The Newish Jewish Encyclopedia. This unputdownable encyclopedia of all things Jewish and Jew-ish covers culture, religion, history, habits, language and more.  Grab a glass of your favorite beverage and “sip” along with us as we learn how the Jews invented Hollywood, why we need to read Hannah Arendt, watch Seinfeld and listen to Leonard Cohen. Even discover the secret of happiness (see “Latkes”).

Sip & Learn Series: “Red Sea Spies” by Raffi Berg

In partnership with Pozez JCC of Northern Virginia and Bender JCC of Greater Washington

‘Secret missions, brazen deceptions and thrilling, clandestine operations – Red Sea Spies has it all. But it has something more important, too – a genuine human mission that made a difference.’ -David Hoffman, author of The Billion Dollar Spy

Watch the Netflix film, The Red Sea Diving Resort at your convenience and then meet the author of the book that inspired the film!

In the early 1980s on a remote part of the Sudanese coast, a new luxury holiday resort opened for business. Catering for divers, it attracted guests from around the world. Little did the holidaymakers know that the staff were undercover spies, working for the Mossad – the Israeli secret service.

Written in collaboration with operatives involved in the mission, endorsed as the definitive account and including an afterword from the commander who went on to become the head of the Mossad, this is the complete, never-before-heard, gripping tale of a top-secret and often hazardous operation.

Raffi Berg is the Middle East editor of the BBC News website, and has extensive experience reporting on Israel and the wider region. His article scratching the surface of this story was the most-read original feature in the history of the site, with more than 7 million readers to date.

Sip & Learn Series: “Once a Girl, Always a Boy” by Jo Ivestor

As part of the Reelabilities Diversity and Inclusion Festival, the Weinstein JCC is pleased to host author, speaker and LGBTQ activist, Jo Ivester who will present her book, Once a Girl, Always a Boy: A Family Memoir of a Transgender Journey. Jo tells the story of Jeremy’s journey from childhood through coming out as transgender and eventually emerging as an advocate for the transgender community. This is not only Jeremy’s story but also that of his family, told from multiple perspectives―those of the siblings who struggled to understand the brother they once saw as a sister, and of the parents who ultimately joined him in the battle against discrimination. This is a story of acceptance in a world not quite ready to accept.

In her book she shares funny, inspirational stories of family life, as well as tips and information to help others strengthen their relationships and find joy every day.
